Beck's Banter - a regular update from Dave Beck on his day to day involvement with the Imps.
Hello every and welcome again to  'Beck's Banter'.

28th January 2012

The new year is well under way and the first month has seen a busy time for the Club and Trust off the field, whilst the business of trying to get points on the field continues.

The new investment into the Club has been the major development. The official statement from the Trust Board is on the ‘front’ page of this website and featured in a recent match programme.   There is in the statement a thanks from Bob Dorrian to the Supporters Trust for their help and involvement and as is noted without the Trust’s assistance this fresh investment would not have been possible.

The topic of a ground move has been brought up too. Much has already been said and I will give here my personal view and stress this is a personal view from me as a fan of over 50 years. So...... Sincil Bank is our spiritual home and always will be. I would love to see it developed with decent roads around it, good access from those roads, a new stand(s) and facilities that mean the ground is used every day as well as match day with the obvious extra revenue that brings to the Club. (I remember when we first went to Shrewsbury’s  new ground, they told me they took around £50,000 from Christmas lunches!!!) Now the first question is.. can Sincil Bank be developed? Then of course can the finance be found to do it?   If the answer is no to those questions, then the option might have to be to move.   I will say straight away that personally I am against a concrete block stadium built somewhere well out of town on a bypass . (Something ‘wrong’ about the Shrewsbury ground – it relies on buses and cars etc to get to). However, if a site can be found within the City limits with easy access for both cars and fans who wish to walk then that might be an option.

A thanks here to Trust member John Roddam, who has written to existing shareholders to invest in the Club. The monetary figure is growing daily and I understand is already over £4000. Not only thanks to John but also to the fans who have invested and take pride in owning part of the Club.

On the field, the inconsistencies continue – good wins against Forest Green, Southport and a fighting draw against Gateshead have been balanced out by the poor displays against Carshalton, two losses against our neighbours and rivals Grimsby and last Saturday, a defeat at Kettering.

In mentioning Kettering, they and of course Darlington have been in the news recently as they stand on the edge of the unthinkable as far as their fans are concerned. We had a long chat with the officials from Kettering (not Mr.Ladak) and the fear and concern could be seen in their eyes and voices. Their ‘D’ day appears to be soon as they face a winding up order in Court and they really didn’t know if they would survive or not. I won’t comment on the rights and wrongs of either Club but the fans must always have a Club to support.

Ever onwards and upwards

12th December

Its been as always a busy time on and off the pitch these last couple of weeks.
Our league position is still not good but David Holdsworth and the team are working very hard to put that right. The last three home games have seen a big improvement and its important the team put on a display for the home fans. David has said he has players now who want to wear the shirt and I think we can all see that.  Before home homes I walk round the ground to talk to as many fans as I can and at away games I again speak to our fans and just about all whilst still thinking there is some way to go, are pleased with the commitment and improvement. I now sit in the Co-op stand for games which I really enjoy and of course an opportunity to swap ideas etc.

Away from home, we haven’t had the return in the league we are looking for. For our trips to Wales, I must say off the field both Newport and Colwyn Bay have made us most welcome. The team have had an overnight stay for both games, thanks to the generosity of the Echo (thanks to Leigh Curtis for pushing this through) and David Featherstone. The win at Colwyn Bay has given us a home draw against Carshalton in the next round of the Trophy and moved us a little closer toWembley!!! There is of course a financial reward for each round and that is most welcome. I should also mention and give thanks to the Gold Member of the Trust who has sponsored some match meals.

The Club’s AGM was well attended and whilst the financial position  is difficult, it appeared most who attended accepted that the Board  are working hard in these challenging times to run a sustainable club.

We will have all seen the press reports regarding Mike Thompson. There are legal responsibilities here and the Trust is taking advice daily. The court case – on Tuesday 6th December- was for charges for non-related Trust matters and in no way connected to the Trust.. On Wednesday 7th December after phone calls Mr.Thompson was no longer a member of the Trust Board. I cant comment anymore at the moment, only to say that the Trust will have an independent examination of the Trust accounts and members can be assured we are dealing with the matter as advised and in a professional manner.

A plug now for Silver membership of the Trust. For an annual fee of £100, you get membership of the Trust with enhanced benefits and £50 of Club shares which of course helps the Club. We have already signed fans to this scheme and we thank them for their support.

The festive season is almost upon us, and just in case I don’t get the opportunity can I wish you now a very Happy Christmas and an IMPressive New Year.

Ever onwards and upwards
