Playing for Success

OnTarget is a Playing for Success (PfS) Centre which is funded primarily by the DfE and Lincolnshire County Council with the support of Lincoln City Football Club. The Centre is one of three Learning Centres in the county (OnTarget@Lincoln City, OnSide at Boston United and Freiston Centre for Environmental education) and is managed by the Lincolnshire School Improvement Service (CfBT).

Playing for Success

Based at the Lincoln City Football Stadium, OnTarget, within its PfS programme, aims  is to provide an innovative learning environment which will help to enhance pupil motivation and attainment within three key areas: Literacy, Numeracy and ICT. The stadium and its many facilities and venues are used to enhance learning and activities are planned to create meaningful and ‘real’ challenges. In addition to improving the core areas of the curriculum, the Centres have been found to significantly improve students’ self esteem and social skills. The programme is aimed at pupils in KS2 and KS3 and targets those who are attaining just below what is expected nationally in at least one of the focus areas. The pupils come by the OnTarget mini bus to the centre one evening a week for nine weeks and enjoy three hours of teaching and activity. The programme culminates in a celebration event at the football ground.
In the academic year 2009-2010 the Playing for Success programme was oversubscribed and due to its success and popularity, has continued to be so for the next academic year. Feedback from pupils, teachers and parents also continues to be very positive and as a consequence the centre has continued to expand its day time programmes in response to requests from schools

Double Club

After a successful year running the Double Club programme out of a specially branded outreach classroom at The Priory City Academy, Double Club has moved back to OnTarget so that it can make maximum use of the stadium and all its facilities. Double Club involves a double experience of classroom and sport sessions and is aimed at pupils in KS2 or KS3 who would benefit from support in literacy and/or numeracy. The Centre is currently working in collaboration with SincilSportsCollege who are delivering climbing as part of the Double Club programme.

Back OnTarget!

OnTarget is involved in a programme to support groups identified through the Mary Knox Education Centre as benefiting from some extra support in an environment which offers a contrast to their mainstream school. The selected pupils, from a number of different primary schools across the Lincoln area, attend in small groups and participate in a range of activities with OnTarget staff. The bespoke programme includes team building and team challenges as well as literacy and numeracy activities in and around the stadium. The pupils are also involved in food preparation activities such as bread making. Sport is built into the programme and the Centre staff utilise the facilities and expertise of SincilSportsCollege.

JUMP4Success

JUMP4Success has developed as a result of the positive outcomes of the Playing for Success programme. On one day a week OnTarget works with a group of Looked after Children. Alongside the tuition given by OnTarget staff, the children are mentored by volunteers from LincolnUniversity and BishopGrossetesteUniversityCollege. One of the main aims of the programme which will run until the summer 2011 is to raise the aspirations of Children in Care. The project offers new experiences and the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with other children and adults over a sustained period of time.

OnTarget Study Support Centre also offer Gifted and Talented programmes, Reward Days, Business and Enterprise Programmes and First Aid Training for Children.
